May 26, 2012 1pm – League MEMBER Registration Date and Drop-In Beach Day

Come out to Fred Henne Park’s Long Lake Beach to register your team(s) for YK Beach Volleyball!   We will be there from 1pm – 3pm.  And for those interested in volunteering should arrive no later than 2pm for a review of this summer’s schedule, and to sign up for any remaining volunteer positions!

YK Beach Volleyball Membership:

$50 membership fee covers league play for the entire summer. It allows members to gain access to up to 3 nights of beach volleyball per week, as well as the opportunity to host weekend Drop-In sessions.

Fees are used to purchase new equipment, beach volleyballs, etc.  Any leftover fees are used towards mid-summer barbecue.  Last year the leftover fees were donated to the NWT SPCA as part of the YK Beach Co-Ed Cup fundraiser for the new NWT SPCA Shelter!

YK Beach Volleyball League:

Tuesday League Night – 6:00pm-8:30pm

Men’s 2’s – First players on the beach, select the men’s court they’ll play on, and the skill level of that court.  From Beginner’s to Advanced levels.

Women’s 2’s – First players on the beach, select the women’s court they’ll play on, and the skill level of that court.  From Beginner’s to Advanced levels.

Wednesday League Night – 6:00pm-8:30pm

Co-Ed 2’s (one male, one female) – First players on the beach, select the women’s court they’ll play on, and the skill level of that court.  From Beginner’s to Advanced levels.

Thursday League Night – 6:00pm-8:30pm

Drop-In Night – a perfect opportunity for players whose partners are away that week for work/vacation. Drop-In night allows individuals (or teams who want to mix it up a bit) to come and play.  First players on the beach, select the court they’ll play on, and the skill level of that court.  From Beginner’s to Advanced levels.

Drop-In can be catered to whatever the players are interested in playing.  A rotating King of the Court set-up is often used… though some opt for full games, switching partners after each game.  And if a tournament is just around the corner, some players use this evening as a chance to set up drills to practice serving/hitting/receiving/setting skills.

Drop-In Saturday’s/Sunday’s 1pm-3pm

All league members are eligible to host the weekend drop-in sessions.  This is a chance for anyone to come and play beach volleyball.  By having a YK Beach Member available during this time, they can set up mini-tournaments, mini-clinics, or king/queen of the court sessions.  We recommend that 1 net be allocated as an “advanced” net and the other court be open for beginners.  If more courts are required, Volunteer Members can set up additional nets – barring available space on the beach… but the additional nets must be taken down by the end of the day and returned to the storage shed.

2012 Snow Volleyball Tournament – a HUGE SUCCESS!

This is a little report on the 2012 YK Beach’s SNOW VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT held Saturday, March 10, 2012 at the SnowKing’s Castle:

11 Teams raised a total of $2683.25 for the local NWT SPCA Shelter!!  They then battled it out for those furry friends of the North, each showing exceptional true north mentality, dressed in a variety of layered winter clothing.  The games lasted from 11am until the final match was won at around 4:30pm!  We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day – for SNOW volleyball that is.  A balmy -14C with a bright and sunny sky.  (though it got pretty cold and windy near the end, as the final teams playing will attest to!)

Here are the Results:

1st Place – Team Ice Ice Baby were crowned with the traditional woolen toques, thanks to prize donation funds from Letia Obed in Iqaluit, NU and a discount from Overlander Sports.  They also received a Brunch for 2 from the Explorer Hotel and a Dog Sled Ride for 2 with local musher Kaja Kotulak.

2nd Place – Team Tripod – with only 3 players was awarded a 2 hour sheet rental from the YK Curling Club and Calendars from the NWT SPCA

3rd Place – Team Nailers from Clark Builders was awarded T-Shirts from NWT SPCA

And a special prize was awarded to the top fundraiser: Team April who raised a team total of $1188.25!!!  They received two gift certificates, each good for 1 day at Qimmiq Kennels’ Doggy Day Camp!

Thanks so much to all the donators, players, and volunteers who helped to make this one of our very best Snow Volleyball Tournaments ever!  Stay tuned for the summer session, starting at the end of May when we’ll trade snow for sand and enjoy another season of YK Beach Volleyball!

2012 Snow Volleyball Tournament

Snow Volleyball Action ShotIt’s that time of year again! The sun is rising earlier and setting later every day… which means we’re getting closer to our annual Snow Volleyball Tournament here in Yellowknife, NT.

At 62°26′32″N 114°23′51″W where snow arrives and stays put from November to April, it’s an athlete’s wonderland – even if you’re used to squishing your toes in the sand… you’ll find that snowpants, winter boots, mitts and a toque aren’t that bad an alternative when you can still jump around in “soft stuff”… Some would say a dive in the snow is way better than sand – cause, well – you can eat a mouthful of snow – not sand!

We’re gearing up and getting ready to have our 6th annual YK Beach Snow Volleyball Tournament on

Saturday, March 10, 2012

An open, co-ed event for all athletes ages 16+, be sure and email ykbeach@gmail.com to get your team of 2 to 4 players registered.  We’re going to try and make this event a fundraiser for our local NWT SPCA Shelter currently under construction… So if you’re a local business that would be interested in donating some swag for prizes, please let us know!!

Minimum fundraising amount per team is $100 – donation forms will be distributed when you sign up via email.

Practice your moves, and get ready – it’s going to be another epic tournament!
